A video compilation that includes old footage of floods has been shared online to falsely claim it depicts extreme flooding in Britain on August 26, 2023. No reports from credible outlets were found about floods in Britain that put 78,000 people underwater on Aug. 26. Outlets including the BBC (here) and The Independent (youtu.be/gtJAfA6L5Yk?t=35) featured the video in reports of a flood on August 17, 2022. Reuters could not immediately source the video showing a view of River Taff in Cardiff (goo.gl/maps/AG11itb7Yau98z1j6) (1:06-1:18), but the scene resembles a photograph published by outlet WalesOnline on Jan. 12, 2023 (here) (see photo 21). This montage compiles old clips and does not show extreme flooding in Britain on Aug. 26, 2023.

CNN —A hurricane watch has been issued for portions of Florida’s Gulf Coast as the state braces for Tropical Storm Idalia, which is expected to strengthen to a hurricane and make landfall this week. The hurricane watch stretches from Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center’s Sunday afternoon update. In addition to the hurricane watch, a tropical storm watch has been issued for the Gulf Coast of Florida from Englewood to Chokoloskee and the Dry Tortugas. Idalia is forecast to drop 3 to 6 inches of rain on western Cuba, Florida’s west coast, the Panhandle and southern Georgia, with isolated totals of 10 inches, the hurricane center said. Anyone living in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Cuba, and the northern Gulf and Florida coast should monitor the forecast in the coming days.

Aug 26 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Franklin has become a hurricane and could become a major hurricane early next week, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Saturday. The hurricane is located about 620 miles (998 km) south of Bermuda, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, the NHC said. The strengthening trend should end in about three to four days with shear expected to increase, the Miami-based forecaster said. The forecaster will issue the next advisory at 17:00 ET. Franklin, which brought stormy winds and rainfall across the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti, is forecast to gather strength over the Atlantic Ocean and could near hurricane force this weekend. "Franklin could be near hurricane strength over the southwestern Atlantic by Saturday," the NHC said, saying it expected the storm to gradually strengthen from its current maximum sustained winds near 40 mph. The head of the Dominican COE emergency services a man had been found dead earlier on Wednesday in San Cristobal province, after trying to swim through floodwaters. In a briefing with COE, Dominican President Luis Abinader said the government would attend to communities whose infrastructure was damaged by the storm and that schools and businesses would resume on Thursday. The storm also cut off access to six Dominican communities and damaged roads, water infrastructure and the electrical grid, emergency services said.

Aug 20 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Franklin is expected to cause heavy rains over parts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Monday. The storm was located about 250 miles (305 km) south-south-east of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, packing maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 km per hour), the Miami-based forecaster said. "The heavy rainfall may produce areas of flash and urban flooding as well as river rises and mudslides. Aug 20 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Franklin over the eastern Caribbean and a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico are expected to strengthen over the next two days as U.S. forecasters monitor three other weather systems in the Atlantic. In its latest advisory, the NHC said Tropical Depression Six, near the Leeward Islands was expected to become a remnant low on Sunday night. Next in line is Tropical Storm Emily in the central Atlantic, which could become a post-tropical cyclone in about 36 hours, the Miami-based forecaster said. Meanwhile, a tropical disturbance near the Cape Verde Islands has a 30% chance of becoming a cyclone over the next two days and a tropical depression is likely to form later this week. While the Atlantic has seen relatively mild activity this year, on the U.S. West Coast, the Tropical Storm Hilary unleashed furious flash floods east and west of Los Angeles on Sunday after barreling through Mexico's Baja California peninsula with deadly force.
